UPDATE: 5 Teens Found Dead in Florida Hotel; Carbon Monoxide the Culprit

5 teens that checked into a Florida hotel room to celebrate a 19th birthday were found dead at 2pm today by a hotel maid.

The five were found in their street clothes on or around a bed. They were all apparently longtime friends from their Little Haiti neighborhood.

Police are still investigating the deaths, but authorities believe carbon monoxide caused the deaths. There were no signs of illegal drugs or alcohol in the room.

A 2007 Florida law requires that gas detectors be installed in hotel and motel boiler rooms. It also requires all homes and apartment buildings built after July 1, 2008, with a heater, fireplace or attached garage be equipped with an alarm within 10 feet of bedrooms.

Hialeah police are investigating the inspection and fire records of the Hotel Presidente to see if the building had been ordered to install carbon monoxide detectors.

Such a sad, tragic story!! Prayers to the family and friends of the victims!!

PSA: Possible Carcinogen Found in Drinking Water in 31 Cities!!!

The study, which will be released Monday by the Environmental Working Group, is the first nationwide analysis of hexavalent chromium in drinking water to be made public. It comes as the Environmental Protection Agency is considering whether to set a limit for hexavalent chromium in tap water. The agency is reviewing the chemical after the National Toxicology Program, part of the National Institutes of Health, deemed it a “probable carcinogen” in 2008.

The federal government restricts the amount of “total chromium” in drinking water and requires water utilities to test for it, but that includes both trivalent chromium, a mineral that humans need to metabolize glucose, and hexavalent chromium, the metal that has caused cancer in laboratory animals.

Last year, California took the first step in limiting the amount of hexavalent chromium in drinking water by proposing a “public health goal” for safe levels of 0.06 parts per billion. If California does set a limit, it would be the first in the nation.

Student loan debt exceeds credit card debt in USA

Sad but true, but whether some people know it or know student loan debt has now exceeded credit card debt at a rate if $850 billion withstanding. So just to give you an idea of the magnitude, credit card debt is designed to be paid off within a couple of yrs if minimal payments are made whereas student loan payments are engineered for a 10yr payoff...so do the math considering that now we owe more money in student loans....meaning the longer the payoff period the more interest being accumulated! My theory: because of all these goofball for-profit schools like the University of Phoenix that have predatory marketing techniques that target lower income students or minorities to receive millions of dollars a yr in Pell Grant funding, have high degree costs, yet produce graduation rates of less than 9% for 1st time bachelors degree students or quite simply a lot of people who are trying to counteract the financial stress of the recession by either staying in school longer or attempting to go back to school to use student loan returns as supplemental income to handle their basic costs of living.

Stem Cell Transplant Cures HIV In 'Berlin Patient'

On the heels of World AIDS Day comes a stunning medical breakthrough: Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

Brown's case paves a path for constructing a permanent cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.

Last week, Time named another AIDS-related discovery to its list of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010. Recent studies show that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals, medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV, can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent.

While these developments by no means prove a cure for the virus has been found, they can certainly provide hope for the more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide. Alongside such findings, global efforts to combat the epidemic have accelerated as of late, with new initiatives emerging in the Philippines and South Africa this week.
